Did You Know You Can Smell Emotion?

I'll admit the title of this post sounds completely made up but it's not. According to a bunch of scientists apparently, humans are able to subconsciously detect different emotional states through body odour.

 

I myself have had the unfortunate pleasure of encountering guys in the past who couldn't have been too happy with the kind of body odour they were kicking out but that hardly constitutes scientific proof. So here's what the scientists have to say.

 

 

"Sniffing palms after a handshake, usually within 30 seconds of the interaction, would likely help people learn about someone’s health and genetic compatibility, according to a 2015 study by researchers in Israel. Sniffing can also offer information on people’s emotional state, such as if they are happy, sad or fearful." Discover Magazine

 

 

Note: I don't advocate sniffing your clients palm the moment you meet, that would be creepy.

 

 

Here are some interesting facts about smell

 

  • Smell is the oldest sense

  • Scent cells are renewed every 30 to 60 days

  • Women have a better sense of smell than men

  • Dogs have nearly 44 times more scent cells than humans

  • The human brain can process roughly 10,000 smells

  • When you are asleep, your sense of smell shuts down

  • Smell is our most memorable scent

  • The way we smell plays a large part in who we are attracted to

 


If that's true, then I think this subject deserves a closer look, especially for men in our line of work.

 

Now imagine you're with a client in a lovely warm intimate setting and she's completely turned on.

 

Recent studies show that we can distinguish at least 1 trillion different odours. We initially thought it was limited to 10,000. We have approximately 171,476 words in the English language which means that we'd soon run out if we tried to describe all the olfactory senses shooting through our brain.

 

A lot of this occurs subconsciously so what about fragrances and perfumes? How does that impact the emotions of those around us? I recall sitting on a train recently when a young man got on wearing Invictus by Paco Rabanne and he must have applied at least 12-15 squirts because it was unbearable. I'm pretty sure he picked up on my emotional state when I changed seats but that's another story.

 

How often have we experienced a beautiful woman walking past followed by a lovely scent? Only to realise months later that our subconscious mind decided to store that scent and tag it with the memory of this lovely woman who you'll probably never see again.

 

Something that I really enjoy doing with a woman is to get her to associate a certain type of experience with a particular scent that is linked to us. It's like tagging her olfactory senses with a memory that she'll automatically relive whenever she comes across that scent again.

 

You could be giving your client a full body massage using oil scented with your favourite fragrance. That's something that she's likely to remember and the beautiful thing about it is that it's a completely internal experience that she can enjoy in the privacy of her own mind.

 

When I talk about nurturing a woman's arousal so she's able to tune in to her sexual energy whenever she likes, this is what I'm talking about. "...have you ever wondered why so many guys smell the same when you walk into a bar or a club?"

 

 

Well, I'll tell you, when you go into a perfumery to look for a new fragrance, the assistant who comes over will show you the same top 10-15 fragrances that they show every other guy because that's what's selling at the moment. They do this irrespective of price point which is why you smell 50 guys in a swanky club all wearing the same £300 bottle of Aventus. 

 

I'll admit, shop assistants probably hate me because when I go fragrance shopping I really take my time. After I've rejected 10-20 of the usual fragrances that they try to off-load on everyone else, they give up and leave me to it.

 

A scent should be something that you can really make your own, a calling card if you will. Something that your client will instantly identify with you and the amazing memories you've given her.
